How I switched to Ubuntu after using Windows for 20 years (the 2022 guide)

I was a Windows user for many years, but after buying a new computer I decided to use Ubuntu as the main OS.

How is it going? Let’s figure it out.

Why Linux?

The first question will be, probably, “why”? Well, for me there were several reasons for that.

  • Firstly, from the marketing perspective, the process of purchasing Windows is awful — even if you want to buy Windows 10 or Windows 11, it is not so easy to do this. I was just not able to find a page on the Microsoft website, where I can buy the OS and the license key for a reasonable price. On the page with the promising title Get Windows 11 I was only able to see the text “Windows 11 is rolling out now. Check to see if your current PC meets the requirements to run Windows 11” and a link to the shops where I can buy a computer. But how am I supposed to install this OS on a new computer that I already have, and where can I get the license key, was completely not clear. Maybe I can find this information somewhere, but as a potential customer, why should I care? If I already ‘landed’ on the product page, it’s a company’s responsibility to make the purchasing process easy.
  • Secondly, the Windows price is just too high. Of course, if you are buying a laptop or a PC…
